Is gel polish actually bad for your nails?

A quick note before we start: This guide is for education, not diagnosis. We describe what the research and dermatologists generally say about gel manicures, but only a qualified clinician can tell you what is actually going on with your skin and nails. Short answer: gel polish itself, cured properly and removed properly, is not the nail wrecker it gets blamed for being. Most of the damage people attribute to gel actually comes from how it goes on, how long it stays on, and above all how it comes off. There are two genuine risks worth understanding, the UV lamp and the possibility of developing an allergy, and both are manageable. Here is the honest picture, so you can keep the weeks of shine without the guilt.
Where the "gel ruined my nails" story comes from
When someone peels off a gel manicure and finds thin, rough, white-patched nails underneath, gel gets the blame. Dermatologists tell a more specific story. The American Academy of Dermatology's guidance on gel manicures points at the removal, not the wear: peeling or picking gel off takes the top layers of the nail plate with it, and aggressive filing or scraping during removal does the same. Long acetone soaks are drying, and back-to-back sets never give the plate a chance to recover its moisture.
The nail plate is not living tissue. It cannot be "suffocated" by polish, and it does not heal, it only grows out. That cuts both ways: gel cannot starve your nails, but damage done during a rushed removal rides along until it grows past your fingertip, which takes months. This is why two people can wear the same gel line and have completely different experiences. The difference is usually technique, not formula.

What about the UV lamp?
This is the question behind the question, so here is what is actually known.
The FDA's published consumer guidance has described nail curing lamps as low risk when used as directed, noting the agency had not received reports of burns or skin cancer attributed to them. The exposure per manicure is brief and the lamps emit mostly UVA. A 2013 photobiological safety evaluation of six UV nail lamps reached a similar place: even the strongest lamp tested would take about 30 minutes of exposure in a single day to reach recommended limits, far more lamp time than a gel appointment uses.
At the same time, a 2023 study from researchers at the University of California San Diego, published in Nature Communications, exposed cultured human and mouse cells to a UV nail dryer and found DNA damage and mutations in those cells. It is important to read that finding for what it is: cells in a dish under repeated direct exposure, not a demonstrated cancer risk in people who get manicures. The researchers themselves called for larger long-term studies. Nobody serious is claiming your gel habit is proven dangerous, and nobody serious is claiming the question is closed either.
The practical response is cheap and easy: dermatologists suggest applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your hands before a gel appointment, or wearing fingerless UV-protective gloves that leave only your nails exposed. Ten seconds of prep, and you have taken the same precautions dermatologists recommend.
The allergy risk is real, and it is about skin contact
The clearest documented harm from gel is not weak nails. It is allergic contact dermatitis, an immune reaction most often triggered by an acrylate ingredient called HEMA in uncured gel. Once gel is fully cured under the correct lamp, the reactive molecules are locked into the hardened polymer and far less able to reach your skin. Problems come from liquid gel touching skin before curing, and from undercured layers, which is why at-home kits with mismatched lamps show up so often in the dermatology literature. Sensitization can develop after years of trouble-free wear, and once it happens, the allergy is generally considered lifelong.
The fix is prevention: keep gel off your skin, cure every layer fully with the lamp the formula was designed for, and do not peel or pick. How to wear gel and keep your nails happy
- Never peel or pick. This is the single biggest one. If it is lifting, remove it properly.
- Remove gently. Soak with acetone per the product's directions, and let the gel release rather than forcing it. Skip aggressive e-filing of the natural plate.
- Keep gel off your skin during application, and cure every layer fully.
- Rehydrate between sets. Oil or thick hand cream on the nails and cuticles daily does more than any single product marketed as a rescue.
- Watch your nails when they are bare. Thin, bendy, rough, or white-patched plates are a sign to slow down. A break is not medically required on a schedule, but giving a damaged plate time to grow out, with regular polish or nothing at all in the meantime, is how it recovers.
- See a dermatologist for anything persistent, like nails lifting from the nail bed, ongoing soreness, or an itchy rash around your fingers or on your face after appointments.
So, should you keep getting gel?
If your nails come out of each set healthy and your skin is happy, there is no evidence you need to stop. Gel is a modern manicure marvel: weeks of wear, glassy shine, and a color range regular lacquer envies. Respect the two real risks, protect your hands from the lamp if you want the extra caution, keep uncured gel off your skin, and be ruthless about gentle removal.
