Gel polish allergy: signs, what to do, and how to keep polishing

Gel manicures are one of the best things to happen to nail polish: weeks of shine, no chipping, endless color. But for a small and growing group of people, gel comes with an unwelcome surprise: an allergy. Dermatologists in the UK and across Europe have described rising rates of allergy to the ingredients in gel and acrylic nail products, and the British Association of Dermatologists has publicly warned about it. The good news is that a gel allergy is manageable, and for many people it does not mean giving up polish at all. Here is what to look for and what to do.
What a gel polish allergy actually is
A gel polish allergy is a form of allergic contact dermatitis. Your immune system learns to recognize a specific ingredient, most often an acrylate monomer called HEMA (short for hydroxyethyl methacrylate), and reacts every time that ingredient touches living skin.
The key detail: the reaction is triggered by uncured gel. Once gel is fully hardened under the lamp, the reactive molecules are locked into the polymer and are far less able to reach your skin. Problems start when liquid gel touches skin before curing, or when gel is undercured because of a weak or mismatched lamp. That is why at-home gel kits are so often involved: a little flooding of the cuticle here, a lamp that does not quite match the formula there, and skin gets repeated contact with reactive ingredients.
Sensitization can happen after months or years of trouble-free gel wear. And once your immune system has learned the trigger, that allergy is generally considered lifelong.
The signs to look for
Reactions usually show up around the nails, but not always. Commonly reported signs include:
- Itching, redness, burning, or swelling of the skin around the nails
- Small blisters or weeping skin at the nail folds
- Nails lifting away from the nail bed (the medical term is onycholysis)
- Nail thinning or splitting after repeated reactions
- Tingling or numbness in the fingertips
- Itchy rashes on the eyelids, face, or neck, because your fingers touch your face all day
Two things make this allergy sneaky. First, the reaction can appear a day or two after your appointment, so it is easy to blame something else. Second, it can show up far from your hands. Eyelid rashes are a classic presentation described in the dermatology literature.
What to do if you think you are reacting
- Stop using gel products now. Every additional exposure reinforces the allergy. That includes gel polish, builder gel, and acrylic systems, which share related ingredients.
- Do not rip the current set off. Have the product removed gently, and tell your nail tech what is going on. If your skin is badly inflamed, a clinician may advise on how and when to remove it.
- See a dermatologist, ideally one who offers patch testing. Patch testing is the gold standard for confirming exactly which ingredient you react to. HEMA is so common a culprit that it was added to the European baseline patch test series in 2019. Knowing your specific trigger turns guesswork into a plan.
- Treat the skin gently while it calms. A clinician can recommend appropriate care for the flare. Resist the urge to self-diagnose with harsh home remedies.
- Tell your dentist and doctors. Acrylate allergies can cross-react with some dental materials, orthopedic bone cements, and medical adhesives, including some glucose monitor and wound adhesives. This is genuinely useful information for your medical chart.
Can you ever wear polish again?
For most people, yes. This is the part that surprises everyone.
- Regular (air-dry) nail polish is usually fine. Classic lacquer hardens by solvent evaporation, not by curing acrylates under a lamp, so the main gel allergens are not part of the picture. Many people with a confirmed gel allergy wear regular polish happily.
- HEMA-free gel exists. Many brands now formulate gel lines without HEMA. If patch testing shows HEMA is your specific trigger, a HEMA-free system applied carefully by a skilled tech may be an option. Be honest with yourself here: HEMA-free does not mean allergen-free, because other acrylates can also trigger reactions in some people. This is exactly the conversation to have with your dermatologist, with your patch test results in hand.
- Technique matters as much as formula. Whoever applies your gel, the goals are the same: no product touching skin, the right lamp for the product, full cure on every layer.

How to lower your risk if you are not allergic (yet)
- Keep gel off your skin. A precise application is a safer application.
- Cure every layer fully, with the lamp the formula was designed for.
- Do not peel or pick gel off. Damaged nail plates let ingredients reach living tissue more easily. When it is time, remove gel properly (we wrote a full guide on how to remove gel polish at home without wrecking your nails).
- Give DIY gel the respect it deserves. It is real chemistry on your real body.
